I enjoyed my experience at the Birmingham location, so I thought I'd try my local Salvatore, hoping for the same result. It was anything but enjoyable, to say the least. My server during my lunch had an attitude, a very rushy-type, so he wasn't starting off on the right foot with me. Before I decided on what I was going to order, I had asked him about a particular dish off of the Features Menu, which had a sauce that I wasn't familiar with. He said, "It's an olive sauce, but tomato based." Sounds good to me! When my dish arrived, I took my first bite, and was immediately met with a ridiculous amount of spiciness. I avoid spicy food for a number of reasons, but if my waiter would have told me the sauce had crushed red pepper in it, I certainly wouldn't have ordered that dish. One bite, and I had drank over half of what was left of my water to try to cool down my mouth, only to have to wait for a refill as my waiter had his back to me, sitting at the back if the restaurant, looking at his phone. After I got a refill of water from him, minutes later, I told him that the dish was extremely spicy. He said, "Well, I try to avoid spicy foods, too, and you're the first to order it, so I didn't know." At this point, I was livid. I'd have much rather had him admit to me that he didn't know, ask the chef, and get back to me rather than leave out a pretty big detail regarding its spiciness. While he went back to his original seat to check his phone, another waitress asked if I would like to take my dish home. When I said, "No, it was too spicy," she got an attitude, and said, "So, I'm throwing it away?!" I was amazed at the attitudes of the wait staff here... Absolutely unnecessary! What took the cake, no pun intended, but instead of either offering to take the dish off of my bill and have me order something else, he offered me a dessert. I declined because dessert is something I eat after I eat a meal. Twelve hours later, and I'm still chomping on Tums.

Came here for Calamari on my hunt for yummy squid! yelp.com/topic/troy-cala… Highlights -Tender rings, tiny tentacles -Nicely seasoned. -Overbreaded Meh, just another fried calamari. Rings were tender, no chew. Hint of older oil / metallica taste I couldn't quite place, but seasoned well regarding salt and what looked like parsley. Batter itself wasn't overlay dense or 'heavy' it was just a bit much. Yes there were some tentacles, but really they were almost micro. When that happens the breading all the arms if you will to clump together, and excess batter forms between each tentacle. Really need larger tentacles so each one is battered indepently. On to the next one, and not back to this one.

First off, Darlene who took my order incorrect had a whatever attitude. Our chicken parmesan was so burnt it was black, they give this crap to takeout so they won't get it back. At $30 for 2 dinners it was awful. I have had better from a $2 frozen dinner, don't waste your money...

The waitress we had definitely made us laugh - but that was the high point. The food was okay - nothing to note, the flavors weren't particularity robust or mouth watering. The meal wasn't bad - it just wasn't good. With a good Italian meal I expect a lot of love and care that you can taste in the sauce - I just didn't get that here. More of a here's your food now go. The canoli was delicious - it's not something I have every day so it did hit the spot. We won't be going back if it's our choice - just not enough flavor to hold my palate.

My favorite Italian place. Shrimp scampi is outstanding. It's small (let's go with "quaint"), but the service and food is amazing.

Stopped in on June 2nd and ordered the Fresca Pasta. It was drowning in oil and had zero flavor. The other thing that grinds my gear is the over cooked penne pasta. How hard is it for the cooks to make aldente pasta. The vegetables were undercooked and crunchy. Onto desert. I ordered the bread pudding and it was terrible, poorly made not very good. The only good thing about this meal was the service. Waitress name was Madison, she was very nice and friendly.

I would give this 3.5 stars for the food itself, but I put 1 star because I believe this place to be prejudiced. My friend and I came in for dinner and were seated on the left side of the restaurant, where no one else was it. As we sat we saw about 6 parties come in and be seated on the right main side of the dining area. I asked the waitress and she claimed that it was her section but we saw her serving guests on the other side. Very apparent, will not ever come here again.

I live in the area and I've always wanted to try this place because I LOVE Italian food. I was certainly not disappointed. I did however have the impression that it was going to be "fancier" on the inside, but I love the way it is decorated. Very quaint and the food was delicious. I will be coming back soon!

The last several times I've been here the service has been satisfactory, actually. The food is still really good, too! They appear to have a new waitstaff that is significantly less awkward.

This is a pretty good Italian place. You start off with an entire loaf of bread and olive oil dipping sauce with marinara...which in itself is sufficient for a meal! I usually get the Chicken Pasta Divallo, which has roasted chicken breast, mushrooms, in a cream sauce...it's so delicious. Also the entrees come with salad...I highly recommend the house salad with the Romano dressing...it's out of this world! Love this place because it's convenient, down the street, and has awesome Italian food, and the service is great!

really good food. pretty authentic but not as good as some of the other italian places I've rated. just depends on how far you wanna drive

Impeccable service, every single time. Dishes that make you forget about low-carb blah, blah, blah. My favorite Italian place in the area. Even better than the other locations that they have. It's our Sunday night hangout with the kids because they do Sunday dinner better than I EVER could. Yum!

I've driven past this place for 15 years & I've never once thought about eating here. I've never once heard of one person I know talk about this place & I decided to check it out & see what's up with my own two eyes. The calamari was "exactly how it should be". Tubes & tentacles lightly floured, deep fried, seasoned with salt & pepper, served with a house made tomato dipping sauce and lemons. I would order this everytime I dined here. Homemade minestrone soup was a little different then the tomato based broth soup with vegetables some may be used too. This soup was cream based with ditalini noodles, broccoli florets & diced vegetables. House salad was nothing fancy. Mixed greens tossed in a creamy house made Italian vinaigrette (maybe a little too much dressing) with croutons & chickpeas. The fresh baked breads with dipping sauce was just another treat I had to fight the urge to eat so that I had room for my meal, very delicious. I'm a tough cookie when it comes to Italian food, having cooked it for 10 plus years here in Metro Detroit. The gnocchi (potato dumplings) were ok. The Pesto was defiantly something the chef should be proud of. Sauteed sliced garlic, toasted pine nuts tossed with fresh basil & olive oil that complimented the gnocchi perfectly. I couldn't help myself & had to add some juicy sliced Italian sausage to my pasta, and it made for a better then average pasta dish. The kids got spaghetti, which was painted & topped with a meatball and pomodoro sauce( no sea of water at the bottom of bowl which is aleays a good sign). We also ordered the chicken Parmesan with a side of penne which was good. I would go into more detail but lets face it, if you cant make a chicken Parmesan, the odds are you wouldn't have made it this long. Our server had her hands full when we arrived but communicated that well & really did a great job. We ordered a piece of their homemade tiramisu & left not one crumb on the plate, muah. The kids meals came with a free scoop of ice cream. I thought the price for this meal was a little high but regardless the quality of food is good. I'm not sure if I would add this to my rotation of restaurants to visit in the near future but I can understand why they do so well with local clientele.

Appearances can and usually are deceiving. It had been years since I had dinner here, though I remember it being underwhelming that time (though the exact details of why escape me). What's funny is I left the house tonight simply because there was no food for me to cook myself at my home. The original plan was to simply stop at White Castle, stuff my pig face, and tell nobody. Somehow I ended up here instead, opting to sit down and have a proper meal. I should've went with the sliders. Of course, the restaurant is quaint and the service is good, but it's just awful food. The bread is a cold pre-sliced loaf, and there was a bland minestrone soup to start. I ordered the veal piccata, one of my favorite dishes. Maybe I misread the menu, but I ended up with essentially rawhide piccata. I had never tasted such tough veal medallions that were basically just swimming in a plate of lemon juice and black pepper. This place is worth skipping.

"When the moon hits your eye..... likea big... pizza pie...... " I swear I hear that song every time I walk into this place. And Salvatore Scallopini never... ever disappoints. I have not had a bad meal there. The service is always as friendly as ever, and their daily specials change and keep a good mixture of things always rotating on through. If you don't fill up on the loafs of bread they bring you, make sure to try some of the Pollo Pasta dishes... they are absoultely fantastic. But yes, as much as I can say that this place falls off the map when you're not looking for it... but make sure to keep an eye out for this place. Another word of advice? Keep an eye out for the local Val-u-Pak... they will throw in 50% off your entire meal if you pay with cash.

This is a great place. Great value. I generally have the chicken tosca when I go and am usually not disappointed. The entree comes with soup or salad and bread served with olive oil parmesan cheese and a red sauce. The service is usually pretty good and prompt also.

This company has been a family favorite for decades... this is the original location I frequented as a kid. In general it meets what is expected for a family-friendly italian restaurant. The food is decent and the servers are generally friendly and helpful, including the carry-out counter. I'd say if there was an improvement or two, it'd be with the food. Lose the excess sauces with the chicken and some of the pastas. They feel like they are swimming. Sure it's tasty, but just too much. Calamari absolutely needs to be fresh, you can always taste when frozen then thawed. The veal isn't tender enough. The desserts are good though, some of the best Tiramisu I've had, and the cannoli cream is mild and creamier. The pasta dishes with handmade pasta or fresh sauces are the best.

Can't go wrong, the food quality is spot on each time we come for dinner. Along with prompt service. Love love love the beef minestrone soup.

This is my go to lunch spot - they have a list of 6.95 lunches that are good and filling -Prompt service. I usually substitute the angel hair pasta for the penne. Fresh ingredients - good service - I usually order the Chicken Parmesan lunch. The entree comes with bread served -It cantoro's Italian bread - yum yum - Tomato soup at lunch is very good. Good Pasta dishes at dinner time - I believe that they make some of their pasta. This is a great place. Great value. They have a Romano chicken sandwich that is excellent with house made potato chips..

The food was okay, but too expensive for the quality. Also my husband and I saw a waitress prepare a salad with bare hands after coughing into them, wiping them on her clothes, and touching multiple other unsanitary surfaces. That alone will keep us from returning. Also the atmosphere did not match a venue that should be charging such prices.

Had heard really good things about Salvatore Scallopini so we stopped in late one night when we were in the area. The place was pretty empty but it still took awhile to get our order in. The place had a pretty worn appearance to it but that wasn't really important to us. The staff was friendly but they didn't seem to offer a lot of options for vegetarian choices but what was on the menu. I wish Italian places offered more in general. How hard can it be to have a variety consisting of pasta and vegetables and marinara sauce with some garlic with it? We kept it simple since it was late and basically ordered stuffed shells, genovese (linguine with basil sauce) and one fettucine alfredo. The portion sizes were pretty small and there wasn't enough flavor. Maybe it was late? It was still not a bad meal but just a little too pricey for the quantity.

Not as good as it should be. Same problem at all the locations. This one is cuter & less pretentious. I had high hopes. Gluten-free pasta is corn rice based and was either undercooked or old. Either way bleaughghghgh. The food is better at Olive Garden than here.

This restaurant is really great. I mean, it's just really great in all areas: service, food, ambiance and price. I used to visit one years ago near where I grew up; that location has since closed but my husband and I are now fans of this location. The ambiance is comfortable - cozy and intimate, almost like it's a family owned restaurant, not a small chain. The food is consistently delicious and fresh. All meals come with bread and an olive oil dipping sauce that's been topped with arabiatta sauce and parmesan cheese. The salads that accompany most meals are really ample, and their two house dressings are delish. The food itself is just simply good. I ordered the lasagna and stuffed shells combination. The pasta is cooked al dente, the sauce is really flavorful and the meat they used in the stuffed shells is seasoned nicely with spinach. My husband got the mostociolli with meat sauce and melted mozz on top. He said it was the most perfectly cooked pasta he's ever had! We left absolutely stuffed on tons of bread, the ample salads and pasta dinners and only paid $31 before tip! Super reasonable! The service was outstanding. Our server was knowledgable and friendly, and we never had empty glasses or bread baskets.

Very good food! I have probably driving by this place a dozen times but never really thought much of it. From the outside, it doesn't really look like anything special, that's probably why I never stopped there before. We decided to check it out and we were quite surprised! The service was very good, friendly, courteous. The menu had quite a good selection of food! I had a flatbread pizza and my wife had some pasta dish. The pizza was pretty good and her dish was very good. I dont remember exactly what it was called, but it was good. :) I dont write the best reviews, i guess I lack the descriptive writing style that the other reviews of this place have. All I can say is if you are looking for a nice place to have some good Italian food and dont feel like spending a ton of money or driving all over town, this is the place to go!

This is hands-down my favorite Italian restaurant in the Detroit area. I frequent it often with my Italian Grandmother and we are rarely disappointed! The atmosphere is like a hole-in-the-wall bistro plucked right out of Italy- checkered table cloths, fake grapes and the obligatory map of Italy painted on the wall. It's cozy and inviting but without being too over-the-top. Just enough Italian kitsch. Also, there is a constant soundtrack of rat-pack esque and Italian accordian music playing, which I feel helps add that certain somethin somethin to this restaurant. I mean who wants to walk into an Italian Restaurant and listen to Justin Beiber? Eww. The food is fantastic, and is what keeps us coming back. We always get the calamari appetizer- which is lightly dusted with flour, salt and pepper and that's it. It's always perfectly fried and the calamari is not too chewy. Other favorites are the chicken parmigiana, the sole fillet and the creamy romano dressing that comes on their house salad. I've even purchased the dressing to take home it's so good. For dessert (which I believe is house made) we have tried the tiramisu, the apple cobbler, and the Profiteroles- which are worth the drive from Northville alone! They are little cream puffs dipped in a chocolate mousse mixture and served in a pool of the most delicious creme anglaise. Their minestrone is also very very good, a thick stew like soup with Italian ham and beans. A restaurant great for a family get together, or a first date. *c

A small menu but everything is very good consistently. The tomato basil soup is awesome here and on its merit alone I would keep coming. The chicken parmesan is great as well as the pasta and bread. A smaller venue but it is cozy and because it is small you get a lot of attention from your server (there is no where to hide lol)

This place is awful. The food was awful, the pop was flat and warm (I get it with no ice), the butter was so cold it was solid, the service sucked. Its small, crowded, and loud. The people there were creepy. I hate this place with a passion. I had the eggplant parmesan and it was cold and very squishy. The noodles that go with it were cold. The waitress was mediocre at best. There was a creepy customer who kept staring at me to the point that I started just starting back... but he didn't look away. At that point I threw some cash on the table and literally ran out of that awful place

I will go here for the salad alone. Creamy romano dressing owns me. If you like garlic, you will love this. Their soup of the day and minestrone are also always delicious. The tomato basil is not what you'd expect and slightly just looks like marinara sauce, but the taste is awesome. All of their chicken dishes, for me, have been incredible. REALLY large portions, two whole chicken breasts. I highly recommend the chicken francese, which is doused in a lemony garlic sauce that is amazing when soaked up with the fresh bread. Also awesome is the pasta fresca. Not your typical pasta with veggies. Really flavorful and a big portion. The regular pastas with red sauces can be a little dry, especially if you get them as carry out. Actually, I don't recommend them as carryout at all unless you inhale them immediately. Maybe if you ask for a lot of extra sauce, but otherwise it gets soaked up by the pasta really fast, which then becomes chewy and hard to digest. I think maybe this is where people are mostly disappointed. Just go with the giant plates of protein. Also, you have to love garlic at this place. Thinking back to all of the dishes I just recommended, their are giant slices of roasted garlic cloves in every one. For me, this is beautiful, for others, maybe not. Honestly, this is the best, if not the only Italian in the area, and I am very happy with it. I eat it at least twice a month, always carryout because the portions are larger, and the prices can be a little steep so I try and get my moneys worth.

Salvatore Scallopini is cute and quaint and comfortable. They have a full bar and nice wine and beer selections. I tried an Italian beer suggested by our server and it was quite enjoyable. They bring a generous basket of crusty bread chunks and a dish of olive oil with a tomato sauce for dipping to get you started, so hard not to eat the whole thing it was irrestible. The calamari appetizer was spot on; tender with a nice crispy coating. We both tried specials, him a veal dish with asparagus in a creamy sauce ~ me a chicken dish with artichokes and red pepper in a light wine sauce. Both were delicious. The Romano salad dressing is simply awesome. Our server was friendly and there whenever we wanted her. Only little bummer was I planned on using my Tradefirst to pay for dinner and they had just stopped taking it. No matter, that didn't spoil our wonderful experience.. we will return.

I thought this place was just awful. The bread was stale, the Cesar way over-dressed, gnocchi was heavy, gelatinous and over-sauced. If you are trying to pack on some extra pounds, this might be the place.

  • Doug G.

The chicken tosca is my favorite. I love this place, and would go there 3-4 times a week if I could. I'm comfortable telling the waitress to pick anything on the menu and I'm always happy being surprised. That has to tell you how great the food is. Homemade soup, homemade salad dressing, homemade pasta, fresh foods. It's the best little secret in Warren.

I've always loved Salvatore for consistently great food. From Chicken Parm to the Sugo. The entire family loves this place. Great for takeout, they never mess up. Friendly staff. It's clean. I recommend the white balsamic dressing. I go here at least once a month for the last XX years and I've never had a bad meal. The Birmingham Salvatore is great too!

Went there for our anniversary, and I have to say, compared to some of the other ones, I was impressed. I love that it's set up like a gourmet market or deli with the chalkboard signs and the display cases. I had a delicious Italian beer that I am still obsessing about. My food was excellent. They give you olive oil with chilled marinara sauce with your bread on the table...a unique flair I thought. Our spinach artichoke dip was average and the portion size was teeny tiny, but the garlic toast bites that came with it were DIVINE. My homemade spaghetti with garlic and oil had an authentic feel and flavor, but way too much oil on it. I enjoyed the texture of the noodles and my salad had artisan lettuce with a house vinaigrette that was simple, but classic. All in all I felt it was a good dinner, but slightly overpriced for the quantity given.

We thoroughly enjoyed the food, but the service was a little slow. Our waitress forgot our appetizer but comped us deserts to take home with us. Their creamy romano salad dressing was amazing, just the right amount on the salad. I don't usually order a dressed salad because they usually put too much on. My husband LOVED his seafood dish (clams, calamari, shrimp, etc). My son took his friend back a couple of weeks later and they enjoyed it tremendously. We will return.

We used to go to Salvatore's a lot and then their food went down hill. A couple of weeks ago my husband suggested we should go to dinner there and I reluctantly agreed. I am so happy that we went because the food was exceptional! First of all they have $5 martini's that are to die for! My favorite being the tiramisu martini. When they seat you they bring you a fresh mini loaf of Italian bread with a plate of their arribiata sauce and olive oil. It was fantastic, the sauce reminded me of my Italian grandmother's, it was sweet with a little of a spice at the end. For the main course I ordered Pasta Simone, which was pasta with shrimp and a creamy pesto sauce. It was out of this world. The sauce was so creamy and the pesto flavors along with the right amount of garlic had my taste buds salivating. The service we experienced within our last 3 visits has been great! We were promptly seated and a waitress was there in a few minutes taking our drink orders and giving us suggestions for our dinner choices. Additionally, the manager all 3 times has come over to our table and asked us how our meal was. If you haven't been to Salvatore's in awhile, I would suggest that you give it a try!

The only thing cool about this place was the owner has a sweet moustache, just like the picture in he sign. went here for lunch and was not impressed. House salad with roman dressing was horrible, way too much garlic. The chicken in my pasta tasted like it was cooked hours before and than heated up like the way it's done at your local Denny's. The pasta was cooked well and the sauce was actually pretty good but was no different from the jar sauce you can buy at Nino's. The next time people want to go here for lunch I'll stay back at the office and open a can of Spaghetti O's...same experience.

Delicious Italian food! The bread is crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside with an awesome marinara dipping sauce. The marinara sauce tastes just like my girlfriend's family's recipe! The Chicken Francese, Gnocchi with Palmino sauce--both awesome! For dessert: profiteroles and tiramisu... both just as awesome as our entree!

I used to go here sometimes during my lunch break when I worked nearby. The service was really quick and friendly, and the food was not terrible. But it is nothing special. What bothered me was that this place is so smoky. I'm not really sure if there is a nonsmoking section, because every time I was here, I was surrounded by smokers, so it was like eating penne marinara + ash.

Good food at very reasonable prices. Great place to take kids as the kid's menu is a steal at $3.99 for pasta, cup of soup and a small scoop of ice cream. I usually order the salmon special when I go and have never been dissapointed. Excellent service

I have been going to this restaurant since it opened when I was a kid. Over the last year it has gotten progressively worse each visit. The calamari was cooked to death and dried even beyond rubbery. Calamari is cheap for a restaurant to buy and at 9 bucks it better be awesome. It wasn't. The salad was ok, how could you make a bad salad? The chick peas were hard, which means they cook their own or buy cheap ones. Need to be cooked longer. The pasta says home made. My shells were not home made and were obviously cooked twice, because they fell apart mushy. Mushy pasta should not cost 14 bucks and should not be mushy. My wife's antipasto salad was ok, sorta light on the meat for 9 bucks. I don't expect gourmet from Salvatore Scallopini, but for the prices they charge, I do expect a reasonably correctly cooked meal. I didn't get it. I asked our server for some parmesan cheese after we got our meals. First of all I should not have to ask for parm at an Italian pasta restaurant. Second, she set it on the far corner of our table and went back to chatting with another table and didn't say a word to us. Each little thing is really no big deal, but everything together combined made it a really crappy evening. I won't go back.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
